Lewiston is a city in Androscoggin County, Maine. With a population of 36,592 at the 2010 census, Lewiston is the second largest city in the state, behind only Portland. Located across the Androscoggin River from Auburn, the two cities together make for one of the busiest areas in the state, with nearly 60,000 people in total.
Like many mill towns in New England and the northeast, Lewiston struggled in the years following World War II, with many of the big employers leaving the area. Widespread unemployment left much of the city in disrepair and empty through the 1980s. In the early 2000s, Lewiston started revitalizing its downtown, with the city taking control of many of the abandoned mill buildings and selling them to private developers.
The revitalization efforts have paid off, in a big way, and Lewiston has won prestigious awards for its efforts to redevelop the city.
Despite the recent development in the Lewiston area, figures show that the city’s median household income is below the state average, at $35,398, compared to Maine’s average of $46,974.
Additionally, stats have shown that Lewiston has one of the worst crime rates in the state, particularly with regard to property crime, as opposed to violent crime, though this still only makes Lewiston about average, on the national scale.
As a result, Lewiston’s police force is larger than most in the state, with 81 fulltime police officers, or 2.22 per 1,000 residents, compared to Maine’s average of 1.69.
